  • 4 medium potatoes, sliced For that comforting, starchy base.

  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or a blend) You choose how cheesy you want it!
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup The magic ingredient for creaminess.
  • 1 cup milk To smooth everything out.
  • to taste salt and pepper Just enough for seasoning.
  • to taste olive oil for cooking For that perfect golden brown on the beef and onions.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it's translucent.
  • Add the ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until it’s browned. Drain any excess fat.
  • In a large bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.

Assembly

  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the ground beef mixture, and then half of the cheese.
  • Repeat these layers with the remaining ingredients.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the potatoes are fork-tender.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Best served with a fresh green salad, garlic bread, or steamed vegetables. For added flavor, a dollop of sour cream or fresh herbs can be used.
